1. Samick Sage Takedown Recurve Bow

Samick Sage Recurve Bow is the best takedown recurve bow for hunting and archery sessions.

This bow has stayed in the game for many years now and is known to be one of the best recurve bow brands.

The amazing fact about Samick Sage is its durability. The limbs are hard maple with black fiberglass. You can purchase the limbs separately to increase or decrease the weight of the bow as needed. Because of its built material quality as it is made from hard maple or Olive Diamond wood, it lasts longer and provides balance in the hand.

SAS Courage is an inexpensive bow which does not sacrifice quality for a lower price. The bow is precisely designed using three different types of woods- Bintangor, Makore and Chuglam hardwoods.

The limbs of the bow consist of Maple and Makore wood laminations along with a high strength fiberglass lamination.

The best part which I like about the SAS recurve bow is the warranty provided by the manufacturer. Being an affordable bow in the best recurve bow category, there is a 3-year warranty on the bow. This is much needed if you are a beginner who is just starting out in target shooting and archery.

The limbs of the bow can be easily detached due to its takedown functionality. This helps you to maintain the bow in its perfect shape down the line, making it one of the most durable recurve bows.

4. Junxing Right-Handed Backwoods Hunter Recurve Bow

Junxing is also a good option if you are looking for the best bow for beginning adults. Although, the brand is not that popular but, the bow is as good as any other bow which I have discussed till now.

The right-handed Backwoods Hunter Recurve Bow is a powerful recurve bow to hunt a small prey.

The bow comes with an aluminum alloy riser with a strong fiberglass limb made from Maple laminations. Although, this version is only meant for the right handed people and the ones who are left handed can opt for Junxing Recurve American Hunting Longbow.

The right-handed backwoods hunter recurve bow is a great affordable option for any experience level target shooter and hunter.

The precision accuracy of the bow lets you hit your target with great accuracy and power. Also, the fiberglass structure of the limb makes the bow a highly durable option for aggressive hunters. The bow supports heavyweight composite limbs and a composite center shot riser which is integrated with large sight window.

The composite can system is supported by all-weather strings, heavy duty, cables and cable guards of an outstanding shooting and hunting performance.

The draw weight can be adjusted between 24-32 lbs giving the archer the flexibility to moderate the speed of the arrow. This makes it a good recurve bow for bow fishing and hunting. Also, it is a great option for beginners before they can move up to a fancier expensive bow.

5. PSE Razorback Recurve Bow – Best Beginner Recurve Bow

The PSE Razorback recurve bow is one of the widely used recurve bow brand in the history of target shooting and hunting.

The durability of the bow can be judged by the fact that the riser is made using three different and the strongest woods i.e. Walnut, Burma white, and Beechwood.

The bow can be easily assembled as it does not require an Allen wrench which is typically used for assembling most of the recurve bows. Also, the bow weighs just 2.2 pounds which make it lightweight thus making it a great option for beginners and young people.

Talking about the history of the bow, the brand PSE was developed when its founder Pete Shepley, a product engineer by profession, started developing archery equipment out of passion in his free time. Presently, PSE is the largest bow and accessory manufacturer in the world.

The Razorback recurve bow comes with different draw weight options varying from 20-35 lbs. The bow comes with pre-drilled holes for accessories. So typically, it is a good option for a beginner who is looking to start his journey in hunting and professional archery. Again, this bow comes in different versions for the right and left-handed people. In this post, we are discussing the right-handed version. However, you can go for the PSE Razorback left handed bow if you are a left handed archer.

The benefit of the PSE recurve bow is that it shoots comparatively fast and is a good inexpensive option for your hunting sessions. This certainly makes it the best beginner recurve bow on the list.

The SAS Explorer metal riser recurve bow is a great bow for family fun and backyard hunting sessions.

The bow is built of durable maple lamination and strong fiberglass making it a compact and strong recurve bow.

Although the bow is quite affordable, the design of the bow is something which is not compromised by the manufacturer. The bow is polished which gives it a smooth and elegant finishing. Also, the bow is carefully designed for a stronghold and an excellent grip for the user. It comes in three different colors- red, blue and G1 Camo(textures of brown) making it beautiful and eye pleasing.

The high strength casting aluminum riser helps the bow to stay intact for many aggressive hunting sessions. You can also modulate the speed of the bow by using different bow weights from 22-34 lbs.

7. Bear Archery Grizzly Recurve Bow

Till now, we have seen the reviews for most affordable recurve bows which are a good buy for beginners as well as the professional archers too.

Now it’s time to include one of the finest recurve bows which is absolutely stunning in looks but, absolutely lethal when it is charged on a target. I am talking about the Bear Archery Grizzly recurve bow.

Bear Grizzly is one of the most reputed names in the history of recurve bows and yes, it is expensive as compared to the other bows. This doesn’t mean that the bow has a high price due to its fancy looks. It has one of the finest custom-crafted limbs made from northern hardwood. In any case, the limbs would not twist or shake unless you mistreat the bow with some serious mishandling.

It is an excellent option for target shooting, advanced hunting as it is accurate enough to handle both equally well. The best part, it is light enough and would not make your hands and shoulders ache even after a long archery session in the woods.

Frankly speaking, I have used the Bear Grizzly personally and I found it the most effective bow till date. Of course, there are other expensive option available too but, I don’t think you will need another bow for hunting or target shooting after using the Bear Grizzly recurve bow.

Concerning the design of the bow, Bear Grizzly is finished in satin gloss which protects the bow from dampness and abrasion. The Dacron string helps the bow look tough and highly durable for the most aggressive long hunting and shooting sessions.

The name “Bear Grizzly” is highly relevant to the fact that the cut-past-center shelf of the bow is covered in Bear Hair. Also, the amazing fact is that this classic design hasn’t changed in last 50 years.

The Bear Grizzly comes in two different variants, one for the right-handed and the other for the left-handed archers. Both have the same features. Presently we have covered the right-handed Grizzle bow. You can check the left-handed Bear Grizzly recurve if you are a left-handed target shooter and archer.

I have used Bear Grizzly for target shooting. The weight of the bow is around 3 pounds. So, it wouldn’t be too bulky for a beginner too and is truly a good option if you have a good budget.

If you are not much concerned about the price and would want to buy a great bow that will stay for years, Bear Grizzly is the best recurve bow option.

The accuracy of the bow is just amazing. Surprisingly, the build of the bow is such that it produces no vibrations while drawing the string and shooting. I said “surprisingly” because there aren’t many bows in the market which offer such a precise build even in the expensive price segment.

Bear Grizzly is truly worth every penny and is a one time buy and go option. But again, if you just want to gain a little exposure first and then go for advanced bows, I have already discussed some amazing bows already.

8. PSE Blackhawk Recurve Bow

PSE Blackhawk is the next premium recurve bow in the list after Bear Grizzly recurve bow. It is a great recurve bow for entry level and would suit best for beginners and newbies who want to learn and move up the game of archery and target shooting.

Well, I think I would be able to provide the perfect reviews for this one as I have personally used this bow for hunting sessions.

Describing the shape and built of the Blackhawk bow, it’s riser is cut from beautifully laminated hardwood with a precisely crowned to hand shelf, perfect for long range target shooting.

The bow is a one-piece undetachable bow. So, its limbs cannot be detached from the riser like the other takedown bows that I have discussed previously.

The bow comes with a crowned grip shelf. It definitely feels awesome to hold it in the hand and shoot an arrow or two. I mean, it just gives you a hunting thrill and as soon as you hold the bow in your hands, the next thing you would want to do is just pull the string and shoot.

I find PSE Blackhawk a great bow for good-old fashioned instinctive target shooting. The single frame of the bow is in fact, a positive sign for the performance of the bow. This is because the transfer of energy through the limbs to the string and then to the arrow channel is very efficient. The single body frame prevents any loss of energy as in the case of takedown bows. This also helps in a smooth draw as well as a vibration free shooting experience. Still, both the types have their own pros and cons.

The weight of the bow is somewhere around 3.3 pounds. This may seem heavy to many beginners but they will soon adjust to it once they practice enough using the bow.

The PSE Blackhawk may seem to be expensive if you are just starting out in the game. But, I think, it offers a better shooting experience than many of the takedown bows. Although I would still like to keep the Bear Grizzly on the top of my list of premium recurve bows followed by the PSE Blackhawk.

9. PSE Mustang Recurve Bow

PSE Mustang recurve bow is another beast from the house of PSE. What I mean is, the bow shoots extremely fast. This is typically the best option for short range shots(20-50 yards). The bow offers a great power in the shot.

Although, I would not suggest you use the bow in case you are taller than 6ft. I think it is a little difficult to shoot an accurate shot when you are tall.

Okay, so let me get this straight, if you are a beginner, I would not suggest you buy the PSE Mustang as it is made for professionals only. This is because the setup of the bow itself is a little tricky task and it takes an Allen key to attach the limbs to the riser by the holding bolts.

So what’s in for professionals here? See, a professional hunter and archer always need a bow that is highly accurate and fast. Also, the bow should be lightweight as it helps the archer to continuously go for a long hunting or target shooting session. For this, the PSE Mustang is incredibly fast and would pierce through a deer comfortably.

Also, once you hold the bow. it typically makes you feel the power in your hands. As the name goes, the Mustang is typically a beast in the segment of recurve bows.

The reason why I said that it is not good for beginners because it requires a lot of adjustments and fine-tuning. Also, the power needed to shoot using this bow is immense and you would surely need an experienced hand and tough shoulders to handle and generate that power for shooting this bow. Simply, there is no point to buy a Ferrari unless you know how to drive a car.

In terms of the additional accessory, the bow comes with pre-drilled holes for attaching quiver and stabilizer. You can also attach bow sights for better aiming.

Now coming to the durability of the bow, I am using mine from past one and a half year since I got it serviced. The black walnut and cherry wood risers with maple limbs made it sturdy and tough for any situation.

For better usability, it comes with different draw weight options ranging from 40-55 lbs.

10. Martin Archery Jaguar Elite

Coming to the last bow of this list, we have Martin Jaguar elite. I am a big fan of the Jaguar recurves. While trying the latest Martin Jaguar, I wanted to see how Martin has enhanced the new bow.

The bow comes with aluminum and magnesium riser which makes the Jaguar a lightweight recurve. Depending on the limbs you purchase, the Martin Archery Jaguar Elite will come with a draw weight between 29 to 55 lbs. This will typically help you to grow in strength as the bow grows.

The brace height of the bow is 7 inch which helps you maintain excellent accuracy. Although the power will depend on the draw weight you choose. In terms of accuracy, it is as good as an expensive bow and Martin has surely improved it in their new Jaguar bow.

The best part is, the bow is equally good for a beginner and a seasoned professional. The cases of limb twist are next to impossible until you really treat the bow in a combat mode. Also, the bow comes with thermal V protective dampening grip which prevents the bow slipping from your hands

The Martin Jaguar is a great option for you as a beginner. During my early stages of learning archery, I was using an old Jaguar. Frankly speaking, it helped me to improve my stance and my strength inevitably increased once I regularly started practicing with the bow.

The limbs are made from hardwood and laminated with fiberglass which makes them durable and resilient to bending.

Recurve Bow Buying Guide

Now that I have discussed the best recurve bows. it’s time to pay attention to some basic aspects which you need to keep in mind before purchasing a bow.

  • The level will decide whether you are starting in the game as a beginner or an intermediate. Although, I would always suggest you go for recurves best for intermediate and professionals as they are one time investments. This enables you to grow up with a single bow throughout. This tactic has personally helped me a lot. I would always choose a better version because at some point I would definitely overcome the beginner stage.
  • The draw weight will enable you to choose the best version of the recurve bow.

Once you are clear on the above points, you would be able to choose the best recurve bow for your need. Look at the below chart to choose the best recurve bow as per your weight.

Best Draw Weight for Choosing a Recurve Bow

Your Weight Suggested Draw Weight
Small Children (70-100 lbs.) 10-15 lbs
Larger Children (100-130 lbs.) 15-25 lbs
Small-Frame Female (100-130 lbs.) 25-35 lbs
Medium-Frame Female (130-160 lbs) 25-35 lbs
Small-Frame Male (120-150 lbs) 30-45 lbs
Medium-Frame Male (150-180 lbs) 40-55 lbs
Large-Frame Females (160+ lbs) 30-45 lbs
Large Frame Men (180+ lbs) 45-60 lbs
  • The budget plays a major role. You should be clear about your budget. Although, I would suggest you go for a decent budget as you would be using the recurve bow for your own benefit and enhancing your skills. Just remember, the right equipment5 will make you a great archer.

Now that you have gone through the list, it’s time to see the most recommended bows as per my experience.

As a professional archer, I have been playing with the bows all my life (at least for past 10 years). Be it compound bows, recurve bows or crossbows.

Okay, I think you may have sensed it already that Bear Grizzly is one of my favorite picks for the recurve bows.

The reason for this I have already explained in the review part but again, I can praise this bow all day. The major reason for this is that it is one of the best recurve bows ever. Of course, it comes with a price tag but then, you don’t buy a recurve bow every other day.

Bear Grizzly comes with a great build quality. The reason I love it because this bow is highly accurate and you wouldn’t even feel any vibration or noise while you pull the string and shoot. It is simply unbelievable.

The bow comes with an excellent grip so that you can aim at your target without getting distracted by the grip of your bow. Also, I was totally amazed when I got to know that actual hair of bear is used while making the bow.

Anyways, I have put my honest opinion in front of you. It is for you to decide which one to choose. You can go for other options as well. All the above-listed bows are of top quality and would inevitably help you to achieve your goal i.e. become a better archer and hunter.

Do let me know your views in the comment section below. I would be glad to help you become a better archer.
